Solar iBoost+

Got solar PV? Get free hot water with Solar iBoost+. Solar iBoost+ uses the energy you’re generating from your PV system, that you’re not otherwise using in the home, to heat the water in your tank.

You only need to have a hot water tank with an immersion heater in your home for you to use Solar iBoost+ and get even more savings from your investment in solar PV. In summertime, you can expect to get a full tank of hot water if you’re out a lot in the daytime or have a large solar PV system and low energy usage. In winter, Solar iBoost+ will use excess energy generation to preheat your water so you will be saving throughout the year.

How it works

There are two key parts to Solar iBoost+:

Firstly, the Solar iBoost+ itself, typically installed in the airing cupboard next to the immersion heater.

Secondly, a “Sender” located at the main electricity meter, often found outside in a box. They talk to each other wirelessly which makes for a no fuss, no mess installation.

The Sender has a clamp which monitors if electricity is being fed back to the grid or not. You may be at home and only using 20-30% of the energy produced by your PV system. This information is picked up and transmitted to the Solar iBoost+ which cleverly knows just how much energy to release to the immersion. Even a steady flow of just 200W to the immersion will start to raise the temperature and save you money.

Why have a Solar iBoost+ fitted in your home?

  • Reduce costs. You will cut the cost of your water heating bills.
  • Keep receiving your Feed-in Tariff. It doesn’t affect the generation element of the Feed-in Tariff payments and the export tariff is also unaffected for most UK households as most electricity companies do not measure export, but assume it to be 50% of the total generation. This means you’ll be getting paid for the export, and using the electricity too.
  • Rising costs of water heating. Even if you do have an export meter, the benefits of Solar iBoost+ still easily outweigh the rising cost of water heating.
  • Reduce your boiler’s usage. You will reduce the amount of time your boiler is in use. Optimise your system by reducing the amount of “on” time for your boiler. Solar iBoost+ suggests keeping it off during the daytime, especially if you’re not at home, and keeping it on in the evening. This means the boiler only tops up already warmed water.

How it works

The Solar iBoost+ is clever, but extremely simple. The 2 parts of the Solar iBoost+ system talk to each other wirelessly. There’s a Sender that measures how much is being exported which transmits information to the actual Solar iBoost+ itself and this responds by releasing the free energy available to heat up water in your tank.

It’s intelligent

The Solar iBoost+’s microprocessor is at the heart of its control ensuring that only excess generated power is used to heat the water in your tank. It intelligently adjusts the flow of energy to the immersion in response to both; changes in generation, for example when a cloud passes over your solar PV system, and changes in home consumption as you go about your daily business switching on and off appliances.

Solar iBoost+ has a threshold of 200W of export power before it starts to divert energy to the immersion. This provides a “buffer” which helps smooth out the rapid changes of appliances switching on and off in the home.

It’s flexible to use

The variable nature of generating your own energy from renewables mean that you’ll want to maintain the ability to both plan when you have hot water and top up when you need it.

The manual boost function has 15 minute increments up to 2 hours on a simple button, so you can override the system and switch on the immersion to run from the grid electricity if you need it. If you change your mind, simply fast forward to the end.

Is a Solar iBoost+ suitable for you?

There are some considerations when thinking about having a Solar iBoost+ fitted to give you free hot water:

  • Do you have on-site power generation? (solar PV and wind are the most common in the UK)
  • Is the distance between your water tank and utility meter less than 30m?
  • Is energy usage in the household less than the energy generated, with excess exported to the grid?
  • Are you looking to reduce your energy bills?

If you can answer yes to all of these, then a Solar iBoost+ is almost certainly the right choice for you.
