Renewable Energy

Funding Initiatives and Incentives

Government subsidies and private financing

In 2010, the Government began to introduce renewable energy subsidies to support domestic and commercial property owners and encourage them to implement renewable energy technologies. Schemes included the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) and Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), amongst other green energy funds that came and went.

In addition to financial incentives for installing renewable energy systems, funded by the Government, larger finance houses have begun to offer funded Solar PV, where you pay nothing and benefit from free electricity. Read on to find out more.

Feed-in Tariff (FiT)

The Feed-in Tariffs (also known as FiT) is a system for making payments to commercial and domestic energy users for creating their own “green electricity”. The tariff has been introduced by the Government to help increase the level of renewable energy in the UK towards our legally binding target of 15% of total energy from renewables by 2020 (up from under 2% in 2009).

The FiTs give three financial benefits:

  • A payment for all the electricity you produce, even if you use it yourself (“generation tariff”)
  • Additional bonus payments for electricity you don’t use, and automatically export back to the grid (“export tariff”)
  • A reduction on your standard electricity bill, from using energy you produce yourself

How it works

When you install a solar PV system, we will help you apply for the FiT scheme. If your system is eligible for the Feed-in Tariff scheme [http://www.fitariffs.co.uk/eligible/], you’ll be paid a set amount for each unit (kilowatt hour or kWh) of electricity you generate – a “generation tariff”. The payments will be quarterly and index-linked. The rates vary depending on:

  • The size of your system
  • What technology you install
  • When your system is installed

You must use a certified installer, such as Just Energy Solutions, to be eligible to apply for FiT financial incentives. If you don’t use all of your generated electricity, you can sell back (“export”) up to half of the units of electricity you generate. You’ll need an export meter if your PV system is above 30kW.

With a Solar PV installation, you will receive quarterly, index-lined payments for 20 years. It is a tax free incentive for property owners, making this a very worthwhile investment.

The FiTs are for:

  • Households
  • Landlords
  • Businesses
  • Organisations such as schools and care homes

Broadly speaking, the FiTs are for everyone. To see how specific individuals and organisations can benefit, from private residents to schools, visit the Ownergy website.

Most forms of renewable electricity generation are eligible for FiTs, in all sizes up to 5 megawatts (enough for a large factory). For detailed information, visit the Feed-In Tariff Eligibility page.

How much you could get

Use the Energy Savings Trust’s Solar Energy Calculator to estimate how much you could earn using the FiT scheme and selling unused energy back.

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The Renewable Heat incentive (RHI) is the world’s first long-term financial support programme for renewable heat. The RHI pays participants of the scheme that generate and use renewable energy to heat their buildings. By increasing the generation of heat from renewable energy sources (instead of fossil fuels), the RHI helps the UK reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet targets for reducing the effects of climate change.

There are two parts to the RHI:

  • Domestic RHI. Launched in April 2014, the domestic RHI is open to homeowners, private landlords, social landlords and self-builders.
  • Non-domestic RHI. Launched in November 2011, the non-domestic RHI provides payments to industry, business and public sector organisations.

The RHI gives two financial benefits:

  • A payment for all the heat you generate and use
  • A reduction on your standard energy bill, from using energy you produce yourself

How it works

When you install a renewable heat system such as heat pumps or biomass boiler, we will help you apply for the RHI scheme. If your system is eligible for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme or the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme, you’ll be paid a set amount for each unit (kWth) of heat you generate. The rates vary depending on:

  • The size of your system
  • What technology you install
  • When your system is installed

You must use a certified installer, such as Just Energy Solutions, to be eligible to apply for RHI financial incentives. You could earn quarterly, index-linked cash payments for 7 years for a domestic system and 20 years for a non-domestic system. It is a tax free incentive for property owners, making this a very worthwhile investment.

Who is RHI for

Broadly speaking, the Renewable Heat Incentive is for everyone, including households, landlords, businesses, farmers, schools, hospitals, care homes and more. The RHI can even be used by entire communities, coming together to invest in a renewable scheme from which they will all use the heat and share the income.

Most forms of renewable heat generation are eligible for RHI, in all sizes up to 45kWth (enough for a very large commercial property. For details on eligibility, visit Ofgem’s webpage for Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme and the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme.

How much you could get

The amount you receive through the RHI scheme will depend on a number of factors including the latest tariffs available and – in some cases – metering. You can estimate how much money you could earn through RHI using the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC)’s RHI payment calculator.

Energy Funding

In addition to the Government’s FiT and RHI, Green Energy Funds also exist to help domestic and commercial property owners move towards renewable energy. At Just Energy Solutions, we understand that as appealing as renewable technology and energy efficiency is, the cost can be prohibitive. For this reason, we work with Lightsource, the UK’s leading solar group, to provide funded Solar PV to domestic and commercial property owners.

Lightsource look to invest in Solar PV systems around the country, and will install Solar PV on your property, which provides you with an unlimited supply of free electricity and 24/7 Solar PV maintenance at no cost to you whatsoever. Whilst your property will receive free electricity and Solar PV system maintenance, Lightsource make the long-term investment so they can benefit from the Government’s Feed-in Tariff scheme’s 20 years of quarterly, index-linked cash payments.

Solar Buyback Solutions

Solar Buyback Solutions is the UK’s first solar PV buying service; they work to unlock cash from your solar PV system with Lightsource Renewable Energy – the UK’s largest solar energy group. Their three simple step process provides you with a quick, easy, safe and convenient way of selling your domestic or commercial solar PV system, whilst still keeping all the free electricity you generate. The PV system stays on your roof or land, you keep using all the free electricity you generate, and you get a cash lump sum for selling the ownership of your system. Enter your details into the Solar Buyback Solutions calculator to find out how much your solar PV system is worth today.
