Solar PV Takes Centre Stage

Solar PV Takes Centre Stage There are fewer things that define ‘Britishness’ as much as a chat about the weather. Almost guaranteed after pleasantries have been exchanged will be a comment, opinion, remark or more likely good old moan about the recent prevailing conditions that we’ve endured. Most recently the sun has taken centre stage. Beaming down on our great country with a ferocity not often seen on these shores, classifying Brighton in the same breath as Bangkok and St Albans with Seville. We’ve had bare tops galore, insides of cars that feel like a sauna and the underlying feeling that when it comes to temperatures of 30+degrees, we tend to melt a little under the heat. Not only has it been busy scorching lawns and creating conversation, it’s also found the time to help smash records in the world of renewable energy. On Friday 26th May, solar power smashed through previous records and provided nearly a quarter of the UK’s energy needs and when joined by its friends from wind farms and nuclear power stations it meant that over 60% of the UK’s power supply was low carbon. Duncan Burt, head of control room operations at the National Grid was excited and inspired enough to call it the “beginning of a new era”. An era it would seem that more and more people in the UK are clamouring to be a part of. The air conditioning in our office has been handy to cool down the heat of our phones as enquiries roll in for solar panels and solar batteries on a daily basis. There’s a misconception in...

Save Our Solar – Don’t Cut Government Support

Save Our Solar – Don’t Cut Government Support Don’t cut support now, we are only just starting to benefit: save our solar Equity crowdfunding platform, Trillion, raises money for environmental and social projects, and they’re taking a stand against the “unnecessary, draconian cuts” that this Government has imposed on the renewable energy industry since becoming elected in May. They feel the cuts will have “far-reaching consequences not just for the a few large scale solar and wind developers, but for all of us.” Government cuts will damage long-term access to clean energy supplies that, if properly supported, would cut electricity costs dramatically for bill payers, reduce harmful CO2 emissions and make our energy more secure and simpler. Proposed cuts could also limit access to crowdfunds for renewable energy projects, many of which are set up by local communities who are looking to develop a more secure supply. These projects rely on being able to deliver attractive-enough returns to small investors in order to be successful. As the crowdfunding industry develops, government incentives for clean energy are no longer entering the hands of the fat cat investors and big landowners who benefited from investing in it in the early days. Finally, thanks to crowdfunding platforms like Trillion, thousands of ordinary people are starting to make a decent return from it too. Crowdfunding has begun to democratise finance by giving ordinary investors, even those with only a small amount of cash to invest, access to opportunities that were previously out of their reach. Government subsidies have encouraged individuals to democratise energy, by giving energy users the chance to own and profit...

The Many Uses of Solar Power

At the start of 2013, more than 500,000 Solar PV installations had been fitted on rooftops throughout the UK and the British Solar Industry were working towards fitting one million by 2015. With energy costs on the rise, installing a Solar PV system and generating free electricity is fast becoming an attractive investment for UK homeowners. The number of PV installations on residential buildings has grown in recent years and is set to continue to grow as ten million homes in the UK should have their homes fitted with solar panels by 2020 if the UK is to fill its renewable energy potential. However it is not just residential properties that can benefit from generating free electricity via Solar Power. UK businesses spend £2.4 billion on energy annually and could cut their overhead costs significantly if they chose to invest in a Solar PV System. Commercial buildings are perfect for installing Solar PV systems, the vertical walls of office buildings provide several opportunities for PV incorporation and glass PV modules can easily be fitted to office roof spaces. Large commercial buildings such as factories or warehouses have a vast amount of roof space that can be used to install a Solar PV System, even if the roof area is flat the panels can be mounted using techniques that do not breach the weatherproofed roof membrane. Even skylights can be partially covered by Solar Panels, the PV installation can be tailored to each building so commercial properties do not need to miss out on the savings that can be generated by producing their own electricity. For many years, solar energy...

How Much Could Your Business Save By Switching To Renewable Energy?

No matter how big or small your business is, investing in renewable energy is a no brainer. With the potential to produce huge savings on energy and maintenance bills, generate additional incomes and lower a buildings carbon emissions, renewable energy is a perfect solution for all businesses. Commercial businesses typically use a lot of electrical appliances during daylight hours, which is why Solar PV Systems are starting to be seen much more frequently on the rooftops of commercial buildings. Solar PV allows a business to generate their own electricity, which therefore reduces electricity costs. Thanks to the Feed-in-Tariff scheme, installing Solar PV will also generate an extra income for your business. Under the Feed-In-Tariff, your business will get paid for every KwH of energy that the system produces, this payment will made regardless of whether the energy has been used within your business or not. Any energy that is generated and not used within the business can also be sold back to the National Grid. Biomass is also a good option for companies that are looking to cut their energy bills and reduce overheads. Heating and hot water makes up for around 80% of an average buildings energy consumption, so replacing your company’s heating system for a renewable biomass system can generate significant savings. A typical biomass system can cut a company’s fuel costs by anything from 50% to 80% and can reduce carbon emissions by up to 96%. Just like installing Solar PV, installing a biomass system at your business will generate an additional income. Through the Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme, your business will get paid a fixed...
