Who are you calling a Neanderthal?

It’s fair to say that being called a ‘Neanderthal’ is a comparison probably not at the top of anyone’s 2017 wish list, but the conception of our often unfairly judged ancestors of being brainless brutes is slowing being chipped away at – not least by discoveries that shed light on their relationship with fire and ingenious ways of generating heat. One of the most spectacular uses of fire by Neanderthals was in the production of a sticky liquid called pitch from the bark of birch trees that was used to haft, or fit wooden shafts on, stone tools. Since the only way to create pitch from the trees is to burn bark peels in the absence of air, archaeologists surmise Neanderthals dug holes in the ground, inserted birch bark peels, lit them and covered the hole tightly with stones to block incoming air.           Thankfully the days of procuring bark and sitting around holes in the ground are long gone. However, as we launch headlong into a new year in what seems to be an increasingly uncertain world; a world dogged by increasing concern about climate change and the environmental impact of our collective energy choices, we could harness the learnings of our early ancestors and seek inspiration from one of the oldest fuel sources known to man – wood. Whisper it quietly, but a sustainable heating movement is gathering pace throughout the country as more and more people wake up to the secret of Biomass heating. The use of wood as a fuel source is older than civilisation itself, but the rise of Biomass...

Biomass could be providing 60% of the world’s renewable energy by 2030

Biomass is now widely available throughout the UK, and a recent report has predicted that biomass could be producing 60% of the world’s renewable energy by 2030. The report, which was done by The International Renewable Energy also found that biomass could provide 20% of global electricity by 2030 if its full potential is realised. Biomass has increased in popularity throughout the last few years, and has so far accounted for 7% of the UKs energy for 2014. Offering a renewable, low carbon, cost effective energy source that can help us meet our renewable energy targets, it is not hard to see why the UK have started to choose biomass over fossil fuel alternatives. Biomass has also had a positive effect on the UKs economy, supporting tens of thousands of jobs and creating over a billion pounds of revenue. It has even been estimated that by 2020, the biomass industry could be supporting up to 58,000 jobs in the UK alone. The International Renewable Energy Agency say that biomass is an essential part of any country’s renewable energy portfolio and can provide a reliable source of energy when less reliable sources, such as wind, fall short. The H&V News Awards judges have selected the organisations who demonstrated the very highest standards in their respective fields for the 2016 Awards, and the Just Energy Solutions Team is proud to have been shortlisted for both the “Energy Efficient Installer of the Year” and “Smart Installer of the Year” categories.Following the established format, the first phase of judging took place online, with judges reviewing a record number of nominations and handpicking their...

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

The UK is leading the way in the clean energy sector with a new government backed scheme which is the first of its kind – THE RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE What is the RHI scheme? It offers FINANCIAL INCENTIVES for low carbon heating technologies promoting the use of renewable heat Switching to heating systems that are renewable will enable the UK to reduce its carbon emissions Two parts to the scheme – Domestic RHI and Non-domestic RHI The Domestic RHI – available to homeowners, private landlords, social landlords and self-builders Non-domestic RHI – enables payments to industry, businesses and public sector organisations How does it work? By switching heating systems and adhering to the requirements, you will receive QUARTERLY PAYMENTS for the amount of clean, green renewable heat your system produces over 7 years (Domestic) or 20 years (Non Domestic). Will you be eligible? The scheme is open to anyone who meets the joining requirements It is available for households running both on and off the gas grid If you currently run off mains gas you have more potential to save on your fuel bills How can it benefit you? You will have a warmer home You will have cheaper fuel bills You will reduce your carbon emissions The H&V News Awards judges have selected the organisations who demonstrated the very highest standards in their respective fields for the 2016 Awards, and the Just Energy Solutions Team is proud to have been shortlisted for both the “Energy Efficient Installer of the Year” and “Smart Installer of the Year” categories.Following the established format, the first phase of judging took place online, with judges reviewing a record number of nominations and...
